The unique surface chemistry and structural properties of the calcium montmorillonite in Sorbiam, together with a proprietary thermal-processing method, are what help to support optimal gut health in poultry and livestock. They’re also what set Sorbiam apart from other clay-based products.
Raw montmorillonite has a high moisture content due to water molecules between the mineral layers. Thermal processing eliminates free moisture, making the mineral more hydrophobic — a method that is optimized for each Amlan product. Amlan is unique in our use of thermal processing; most companies use harsh and sometimes dangerous chemicals to alter the chemical composition of clay minerals. Thermal processing allows us to safely alter the mineral properties without using abrasive chemicals, and also means that no withdrawal period is needed pre-slaughter.
A healthy intestinal environment does more than just aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. The mucus and epithelial cells that line the small intestine form a barrier to the external environment and are the first line of defense against harmful bacteria, bacterial toxins and fungal mycotoxins. A disruption in the balance of this intestinal environment can result in loss of growth and productivity.
